Top Three: Cup comebacks at Mestalla
Valencia CF's Copa del Rey comeback against Getafe CF will go down as one of the great turnarounds in the club's history. The drama of Rodrigo's two injury time goals delighted Mestalla, which is no stranger to second leg fightbacks...
Vs. FC Barcelona. Copa del Rey Round of 16, 1978/79
Valencia CF had lost 4-1 at the Camp Nou in the first leg, meaning they were the heavy underdogs for the return meeting on April 18th, 1979. Two goals from Bonhof and a strike from Lobo Diarte levelled the tie, and as at that time the away goals rule was not in effect, the game went into extra time.
Dario Felman scored at the start of the first period, and the 4-0 win at Mestalla took Valencia CF through to the quarter finals.
That year, they would go on to beat Alavés in the quarter finals, Real Valladolid in the semis and Real Madrid in the famous 'Kempes' final.
Vs. FC Basel. Europa League Quarter Finals 2013/14
A more recent example of Valencia CF turning around an adverse scoreline came against Swiss side FC Basel in the Europa League. Things had looked bleak for the team after a 3-0 defeat in the first leg at St. Jakob-Park, but the game at Mestalla was a completely different affair. Valencia CF took the game into extra time, as they levelled the tie 3-3 through two Paco Alcácer goals and one from on-loan Eduardo Vargas.
In extra time, Alcácer completed his hat trick and Juan Bernat found the net five minutes later, taking VCF into the semifinals with a 5-3 aggregate result.
Vs. Arsenal. Champions League Quarter Finals 2000/01
The 2000/01 European campaign was quite the ride for Valencia CF and the fans at Mestalla. Playing against an Arsenal side almost at the peak of their powers, they fell 2-1 at Highbury -Thierry Henry and Ray Parlour answering Roberto Ayala's first half goal.
In the second leg, with Mestalla urging the team forward, the home side dominated proceedings as Arsenal relied on counterattacks, but enjoyed few chances. A Martin Keown trip on Gaizka Mendieta inside the penalty area was deemed not to have been worthy of a penalty by referee Kim Nielsen, and the feeling that this was not going to be Valencia CF's night began to set in.
That was until John Carew glanced in a Jocelyn Angloma cross with just quarter of an hour remaining. The stadium erupted, as the team went through to the semifinal stage on away goals. They would go on to best Leeds United thanks to a 3-0 second leg win at home, taking them into the final against Bayern Munich.
